Gynecologic Surgery
Gynecologic Surgery
Prior to our arriving in Sierra Leone in 2006, a radio announcement heralded our visit. This resulted in hundreds of patients traveling long distances hoping to see and be treated by us.
These women suffered from many of the same conditions that women in the US suffer from (symptomatic fibroids, pelvic tumors both benign and malignant, endometrial cancers, and severe pelvic organ prolapse) and more. But, because there was a complete absence of access to any gynecologists in the region, these conditions had been wholly neglected for years, even decades, allowing them to worsen to the point of debilitation. This initial trip exposed the tremendous need for regular quality women’s healthcare to treat these women whose healthcare has been wholly neglected. The concept of One World Women’s Health was born.
OWWH has continued to perform these life-saving gynecologic surgeries on their regular mission trips to Holy Spirit Hospital.
Even more significantly, we now have an expertly trained obstetrician/gynecologist at our Maternity Ward, available to provide these important services to women in Sierra Leone everyday. By improving access to high-quality gynecologic care, we are working to ensure that women’s healthcare is, and will continue to be, a priority.
